Bidayatul Hidayah is a book that was written by the Islamic scholar Imam Ibn al-Jawzi in order to refute various heretical beliefs. The word "Bidayatul Hidayah" in Arabic means "guidance for the righteous", which is what Ibn al-Jawzi intended it to serve as. The book was mainly focused on refuting the doctrines of one of Ibn al-Jawzi's greatest opponents, the Mu'tazilite theologian Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Wansharisi.The book consists of thirty chapters. Some of the chapters are concluded with footnotes, which Ibn al-Jawzi, uses as a means to provide rebuttals against the claims made by his opponents. The chapters are organized into four major parts, each dealing with a different topic:Bidayatul Hidayah was written in order to refute the doctrines of Ibn Wansharisi. Ibn Wansharisi claimed that the Qur'an is not uncreated and that the prophethood which was instituted by Allah could be altered or abolished. Ibn al-Jawzi also includes refutations of other Mu'tazilites like: Abu al-Husayn al-Basri, and Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Ikhshid. Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Wansharisi was a theologian who lived during the eleventh century CE. He was one of Ibn al-Jawzi's greatest opponents. His beliefs, which were mainly the doctrines of the Mu'tazilite school. One of his most famous works was a book that he wrote named "al-Iqtiqaad fi maqaalaat al-imamah" ("The Justification of the Imamate in Terms of its Agreement with Reason"). In this book, Wansharisi attacks Sunni theology by using speculative logic and reason in an attempt to prove the claim that the prophethood could be altered or abolished. In response to Wansharisi's claims, Ibn al-Jawzi wrote "Bidayatul Hidayah", a refutation of his beliefs. Ibn al-Jawzi spends the majority of the book discussing Wansharisi's claims. Although Ibn al-Jawzi refutes the ideas put forth by Wansharisi, Ibn al-Jawzi himself believed in many of the Mu'tazilite doctrines. Ibn al-Jawzi's beliefs were influenced by many of his teachers, who were Mu'tazilites. Some time after he finished his book "Bidayatul Hidayah", Ibn al-Jowzis became an adherent to Sufism, which also influenced his writing style, turning it into poetry. cfa1e77820
